Hygēa

high-gee-ah ]

Hygēa is the Greek goddess and patroness of preventative health, embodying foresight to avoid illness. She symbolises plant medicine, regeneration, cleanliness, and hygiene. In Greek, her name also means soundness and wholeness.

The daughter of Epione (goddess of healing) and Asclepius (god of medicine), she was sister to Panacea (cure-all) and Iaso (remedy).
Often depicted with a python (the serpent of Hermes, messenger of the gods) coiled around a staff and holding a chalice of water, she represents healing, renewal, transformation and vital force.
Worshipped from 500 BCE to 500 CE, Hygea was revered for her role in illness prevention and health maintenance. Over time, she also became the patroness of mental well-being.
